MULL IT OVER Interview
JONATHAN CHERRY: What did you want to be growing up?
TIM ALLEN: Astronaut Drummer
JC: Who or what is inspiring you at the moment?
TA: Who - Different people for different reasons, I take a huge amount of inspiration from Jordi Huisman. I’ve always had a soft spot for documentary/lifestyle photography & how people move in the man made environment, and it’s only recently that i have stumbled across his work. His Rear Window series has spoken volumes to me. Jordi’s varied style has made it okay to have different subject matter and not stay focused on one thing. I’m also really intrigued by Evelyn Benciciova’s work, really unique and progressive. For someone in the same age group and similar passion to create, it’s really inspiring seeing her style evolve over time.
What - Other peoples passion for creativity has always inspired me My own & consciousness itself. It really fascinates me, and through my own perception how i can try and make some kind of sense of it.
JC: What are you up to right now?
TA: Preparing for the next chapter.
JC: Have you had mentors along the way?
TA: There have been a good few, Neil Stayner & Michael Danischewski come to mind first, both met during my college days. Much love to them both!
JC: Where are you based right now and how is it shaping you?
TA: Melbourne, Australia. It’s a perfect place to live, lots of opportunity for young people and a wide range of multicultural regions has allowed me to have an open mind before well before I ever travelled. All my memories belong here and i will always be drawn back to this great city.
JC: One piece of advice to photography graduates?
TA: 30 frames a day keeps the doctor away.
JC: If all else fails - what is your plan B?
TA: Fail? Try again. I’ve learn’t from the art hero, Bob Ross, that you never really make mistakes, you have happy accidents.
JC: Is it important to you to be a part of a creative community?
TA: Very important, I’ve been really lucky to have close group of friends who all have their own distinct craft. We’ve always bounced ideas off one another & expanded our style over time.
